Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spots.
For a smooth ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. They are prone, however to punctures. Make sure you have a repair set.
Frame made of sturdy material
Figures have just been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sense is on the verge of disappearing. Four-wheelers have replaced them, and are more versatile and easy to drive and look stylish.
The bigger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. Having 3 wheeled pushchair and back also makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy out with a newborn and a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass, rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said that "it is solid to push and very solid when you're on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require periodic pumping) have suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my kids.
The shape and size of the seat is another aspect to think about. The seat should be large enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat that allows the child to face you, while others only allow a parent-facing one.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or walking in muddy areas. This buggy is ideal for a single child starting from birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for babies and toddlers from age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness and a spacious padded seat unit. The storage options are great as well, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood and a handy pouch on the back of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels give your buggy more stability when driving on rough terrain. This is ideal for off-road buggies. Additionally, they help you maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have rotating wheels on the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock to provide increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you bump against trees or a kerb. The front wheel will be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.
Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air filled tyres which means they can be used on many different terrains and are more adaptable than 4-wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures, so you'll need a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are among our top 3-wheelers. According to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels that she claims "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles" and are able to move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension that according to Kath "smooths out bumps very effectively".
Buggies with larger wheels can be quite wide, and may struggle to fit in tight spaces. This can be an issue if you're using it as a jogger or you need to be able to get through narrow doorways when out and about. Most models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.
Easy to Manoeuvre
One of the primary benefits of a three-wheel buggy is that it is much easier to maneuver, especially with a child in the back. The way they are built means that the front wheels spin on a dime and are really easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried out a three-wheeler with her infant and toddler and stated: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough terrain and the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also impressed with the way it handled bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable in the downhills or on a rough terrain."
The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something to be aware of when your home is a city. If this is an issue, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better choice for you.
